A3 on Rethinking Productivity: How Automation is Changing the Game

Automation and robotics are transforming how businesses operate, offering new opportunities for efficiency, productivity, and innovation. From manufacturing floors to service industries, integrating advanced technology has become more crucial than ever. As industries evolve, so do the challenges and opportunities that come with them.

On Episode 35 of the Machine Minds Show, titled “Advancing The World Through Automation,” host Greg Toroosian, founder of Samson Rose, engages in an insightful discussion with Jeff Burnstein, president of the Association for Advancing Automation (A3). Burnstein shares his perspective on the current landscape and future trends in automation, reflecting on over four decades of experience in the industry.

The Early Days of Automation Adoption

Burnstein emphasized that despite the advancements in automation and robotics, we’re still early in the process of widespread adoption. He explained that whether it’s robotics, vision systems, or AI, the growth potential is immense, with many industries still in the beginning stages of fully integrating these technologies.

“The demand for automation is growing, but there's so much more to come,” Burnstein noted. He highlighted how industries face challenges with labor shortages, and the aging workforce is amplifying the need for automation to fill gaps and meet demands.

Breaking Barriers for SMEs

One key topic Burnstein discussed was the challenge of adoption for small and medium-sized enterprises (SMEs), many of which lack the resources or expertise to implement automation solutions. To address this, companies like Intrinsic, Vention, and Ready Robotics are focusing on ease-of-use technologies to make automation more accessible.

“The easier you can make it, the better it is for businesses,” Burnstein explained, referring to the need for simpler, user-friendly automation systems that can help SMEs bridge the gap. This shift is particularly important given the global labor shortages and growing demand for improved productivity and efficiency.

Collaborative Robots: The Next Phase

Burnstein also touched on the evolving role of collaborative robots, or “cobots,” which are designed to work alongside human workers. These machines have changed how we perceive robotics by removing the need for large, fenced-off robots traditionally kept separate from humans on manufacturing floors. Now, robots are working side by side with people.

However, Burnstein noted that while cobots are performing tasks near humans, true collaboration is still in its early stages. “They’re doing a lot next to people, but there’s not a lot of actual collaboration yet,” he observed. Despite this, the future holds significant potential for more integrated human-robot workflows as technology advances.

Looking to the Future: Global Adoption on the Horizon

As the conversation turned toward the future, Burnstein expressed optimism about the global adoption of automation technologies. He pointed out that while automation is widespread in places like China, other regions such as India, Africa, and South America are just beginning to adopt these technologies. As these regions face similar labor challenges and a need for increased productivity, Burnstein believes the demand for automation will rise significantly in the coming years.

“There are so many more opportunities out there than we’ve touched upon, even in the U.S.,” he stated, highlighting the potential for automation to address critical issues in both developed and emerging markets.

Supporting Industry Growth Through A3

Burnstein also outlined the role A3 is playing in supporting the growth of the automation industry. A3 aims to be the go-to resource for companies looking to get started with automation, offering a wealth of information, including videos, articles, and online presentations. Burnstein emphasized that A3 is focused on raising awareness of these resources to help businesses navigate their automation journeys.

“We want to make sure that people know about the resources we offer,” Burnstein said, emphasizing the importance of education and support for companies, whether they’re just beginning to automate or looking to expand their existing capabilities.

Advice for Aspiring Professionals

For those considering a career in robotics and automation, Burnstein shared valuable advice. He stressed the importance of networking and building relationships within the industry, especially through organizations like A3. He also touched on the topic of the demand for skilled professionals, which is expected to continue rising as automation technologies become more widespread.

“Get in the room with people who can advance your career, but make sure you have the skills to meet the demands of the industry,” he advised, underscoring the importance of both technical knowledge and professional connections.
